Soul Without Shame

Byron Brown has been a certified Ridhwan teacher since 1990 and has taught workshops on the superego across the US and Europe. This book speaks to more than just your mind. It is addressed to your soul. At different times the material will resonate in your body, or your heart, or in your very being. This is a book to work through slowly, allowing it to stimulate you, unsettle you, move you. Take it in small bites so you can absorb the tastes and textures.

Why Aren’t We More Compassionate

Daniel Goleman brought the notion of "EI" (Emotional Intelligence) to prominence as an alternative to more traditional measures of IQ with his 1995 mega-best-seller Emotional Intelligence.  EI is taught in public schools, and corporate leaders have adopted it as a new way of thinking about success and leadership. EI, and one's "EIQ," can be an explanation of why some "average" people are incredibly successful, while "geniuses" sometimes fail to live up to their promise.

The Act of Self-Compassion

Christopher Germer is a clinical psychologist and professor at Harvard Medical School specializing in Buddhist spirituality, mindfulness, and acceptance-based treatment.  He is the author of The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion and Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, which focus on cultivating loving-kindness in one-self.  You can access worksheets on mindful meditation from:

The Five Things We Cannot Change... And the Happiness We Find By Embracing Them

David Richo distills 30 years of experience as a therapist, pastoral counselor, and self-help author with this timely tome. There are certain facts of life that we cannot change—the unavoidable "givens" of human existence: (1) everything changes and ends, (2) things do not always go according to plan, (3) life is not always fair, (4) pain is a part of life, and (5) people are not loving and loyal all the time.

The Power of Positivity and Taking in the Good

Barbara Fredrickson is a clinical psychologist, a professor at University of North Carolina, and the author of “Positivity.”  You have -- within you -- the fuel to thrive and to flourish, and to leave this world in better shape than you found it. Sometimes you tap into this fuel – other times you don’t. But the sad fact is that most people have no idea how to tap into this fuel or even recognize it when they do.  Learn about positive connections online at: Watch video on Positive Emotions

The Neuroscience of Happiness

Rick Hanson is a neuropsychologist and author of Buddha’s Brain: the practical neuroscience of happiness, love, and wisdom.  He focuses on the fact that “Your brain acts like Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive ones”...the remedy is not to suppress negative experiences; when they happen, and to also hold or savor positive experiences.  Videos and articles pertaining to shame, self-worth, good intentions, and gratitude:

The Concept of Radical Acceptance

Tara Brach is the author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge (2013).  She is the founder of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, DC and is a clinical psychologist whose approach combines Eastern spirituality with Western psychology.  She has a number of videos online that focus on freeing ourselves from suffering:

The Healing Power of Emotion

Daniel Siegel is a professor of medicine at UCLA studying family interactions with an emphasis on how attachment experiences influence emotions, behavior, autobiographical memory and narrative.  He is the author of several books regarding mindfulness, parenting and human development, including The Healing Power of Emotion.  Find awareness and meditation exercises at:

Bringing Home the Dharma: Awakening Right Where You Are

Jack Kornfield, one of America’s most respected Buddhist teachers, shares this and other key lessons gleaned from more than forty years of committed study and practice.
